Class Descriptions:

18+ Dance with a Drag Queen: Dance with a Drag Queen is a weekly dance class with local drag queen, Mona Mystic. This class is all about learning new dance moves, having fun, and getting to dance and express yourself in a safe queer space! Click here to see Mona’s Instagram account.

Teen/Adult Modern Contemporary Dance: This class is curated for anyone who wants to enjoy the creative and expressive movement of Modern/Contemporary Dance. Sara Yanney, the instructor, designs the class to be accessible for all levels. It is designed to enjoy the organization of dance technique in the body while also experiencing the joy of movement. For some combinations, there will be different options, students can always ask for accommodations, and students are always welcome to change movement to accommodate their body. If you come from a dance background, this is a great opportunity to work on your technique and refresh basics. If you are new to Modern/Contemporary dance, welcome! Class starts with floor work, center technique exercises, across the floor movement, and center movement combinations. Sara comes from a background in Modern/Contemporary dance, with her BA in Dance from the University of New Mexico, MFA in Dance Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and 20+ years of dancing with companies including The Bill Evans Dance Company, Motus Dance Company, Wellspring Dance Theatre, and is also the founder and director of the =ibrium Dance Project: Dance for EveryBODY. Sara is a certified Evans Laban/Bartenieff Based Modern Dance Technique teacher, a certified Laban Movement Analyst, and certified Alexander Technique teacher. Click here for Sara’s full bio.

Teen/Adult Ballet: This class is designed for anyone who wants to enjoy the specific system of ballet technique, with it’s own unique style of movement. Sara Yanney, the instructor, designs the class to be accessible for all levels. It is designed to enjoy the organization of dance technique in the body, the strength and coordination that comes from ballet, and enjoying the graceful and controlled style of movement. There will always be options to make combinations more challenging if you are more advanced and options to simplify when needed, and students are always welcome to make any of their own accommodations for your unique body and needs. Ballet class will always start with a ballet barre, center stretching, center floor work, across the floor work, and center technique and combination. Sara started her dance training with a focus on ballet and although her professional focus switched to Modern/Contemporary dance around the age of 16 years old, Sara continued to study ballet, teach ballet, and find a love for the style of movement without the expectation of her body needing to look a certain way (no hating on those with that perfect ballet body). Sara received her BA in Dance from the University of New Mexico, MFA in Dance Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and 20+ years of dancing with companies including The Bill Evans Dance Company, Motus Dance Company, Wellspring Dance Theatre, and is also the founder and director of the =ibrium Dance Project: Dance for EveryBODY. Sara is a certified Evans Laban/Bartenieff Based Modern Dance Technique teacher, a certified Laban Movement Analyst, and certified Alexander Technique teacher. Click here for Sara’s full bio.

Teen/Adult Gentle Movement, Inclusive of Disabilities: This class is specifically designed so folx with different disabilities, chronic pain, recovering from an injury, surgery, or medical procedure, and for older individuals to have a class catered to them, but able-bodied and younger folx who want some gentle movement, stretching, and strengthening in an inclusive space are also welcome to join. This class is designed to help you find some joy in movement with your body’s needs and abilities. Part of the class is designed to be in chairs, but there will be options to stand or be on the floor, and those who use a wheelchair can still participate in the entire class. The class will guide everyone through a warm-up, gentle strengthening movements/exercises, and choreographed gentle movement combinations, ending with rest and meditation. Even though this class is created for folx with disabilities and chronic pain, you can always make your own accommodations or ask the teacher how to modify the movement for your needs. Although Sara comes from a dance and movement background, she has partial disability and chronic illness. At 41 years old, Sara went into the emergency room and ended up having 9 emergency surgeries and 2 additional surgeries with specialists, all due to damage to the digestive system and reproductive organs from previously undiagnosed endometriosis. Due to being in bed for 5 months for the first 9 surgeries and the trauma of the surgeries, Sara had to regain the 50+ pounds she lost, working hard in physical therapy to build back the muscle she lost and regain her health. Although Sara seems more able bodied now, she is left with partially functioning kidney’s, osteopenia, and other health complications requiring intense regular medical care. Sara is also a licensed professional counselor and dance/movement therapist with a deep empathy for medical trauma and disabilities. Sara wanted this class when she was recovering from severe illness and muscle atrophy and is excited to offer it to others so everyone can experience the joy of movement in their body, regardless of ability.
